How to Install Uptime Kuma on Ubuntu VPS: Self-Hosted Ping & Service Monitor
Contabo High-Performance Cloud VPS
Massive 4 vCPU cores, 8GB RAM, and 32TB monthly traffic. Ideal for Linux developers.
Why You Should Never Host Monitoring on the Same Server
When your production web server encounters a hardware kernel panic, power failure, or network routing outage, any internal monitoring script on that machine dies along with it. To receive reliable downtime alerts, monitoring tools like Uptime Kuma must live on an independent, isolated cloud server (such as an affordable $5.50 Contabo VPS).
Step 1: Installing Docker and Creating Volume
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y docker.io docker-compose-plugin
sudo docker volume create uptime-kuma
Step 2: Deploying Uptime Kuma Container
sudo docker run -d \
--restart=always \
-p 127.0.0.1:3001:3001 \
-v uptime-kuma:/app/data \
--name uptime-kuma \
louislam/uptime-kuma:1
Step 3: Configuring Nginx Reverse Proxy with SSL
sudo nano /etc/nginx/sites-available/status.yourdomain.com
server {
listen 80;
server_name status.yourdomain.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3001;
proxy_http_version 1.1;
proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
proxy_set_header Connection "upgrade";
proxy_set_header Host $host;
}
}
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/status.yourdomain.com /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/
sudo nginx -t && sudo systemctl reload nginx
sudo certbot --nginx -d status.yourdomain.com
Step 4: Setting Up Telegram and Discord Downtime Webhooks
In the Uptime Kuma dashboard (https://status.yourdomain.com):
- Click Settings -> Notification and click Setup Notification.
- Select Telegram or Discord.
- Paste your Bot Token or Webhook URL.
- Click Test. You will receive an instantaneous test ping on your phone.
Step 5: Publishing a Public Client Status Page
Uptime Kuma allows building public status dashboards without revealing internal IP addresses. Go to Status Pages, click New Status Page, assign custom slug /status, add your monitored web services, and attach your company logo.
