How to Install Portainer CE on Contabo VPS: Manage Docker Containers Visually
Contabo High-Performance Cloud VPS
Massive 4 vCPU cores, 8GB RAM, and 32TB monthly traffic. Ideal for Linux developers.
Simplifying Docker Administration with Portainer
Managing Docker containers entirely through the command line is powerful, but inspecting logs across 15 containers, pruning unused volumes, and configuring bridge networks can become tedious. Portainer Community Edition (CE) delivers an enterprise-grade web interface that simplifies container lifecycle management while preserving full Docker CLI compatibility.
Prerequisites
- A Contabo VPS running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Docker Engine installed.
- Ports 9443 (HTTPS Web GUI) and 80/443 open in your firewall.
Step 1: Creating the Portainer Data Volume
Portainer stores its internal database, user accounts, and SSL certificates in a persistent volume:
sudo docker volume create portainer_data
Step 2: Deploying Portainer CE Container
Launch the official Portainer CE container bound to the local Docker socket:
sudo docker run -d \
-p 9443:9443 \
--name portainer \
--restart=always \
-v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock \
-v portainer_data:/data \
portainer/portainer-ce:latest
Step 3: Initial Setup & Creating the Admin User
Note: Portainer requires you to set an administrative password within 5 minutes of launching the container. If you wait longer, the setup window times out for security reasons (requiring a container restart).
- Open your browser and navigate to
https://YOUR_CONTABO_IP:9443. - Accept the self-signed certificate warning.
- Set a strong 16-character administrative password.
- Select Get Started with the local environment.
Step 4: Deploying Multi-Container Applications with Stacks
In Portainer, click Stacks -> Add stack. You can paste any standard docker-compose.yml file directly into the web editor (for example, WordPress + MySQL, Ghost, or N8N automation workflows) and launch it with a single click.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can Portainer manage containers on multiple Contabo servers?
Yes! By installing the lightweight Portainer Agent container on your secondary servers, you can manage your entire fleet of Contabo VPS nodes from a single centralized Portainer dashboard.
