How to Install Cockpit Web Console on Contabo VPS: Graphical Linux Server Management
Contabo High-Performance Cloud VPS
Massive 4 vCPU cores, 8GB RAM, and 32TB monthly traffic. Ideal for Linux developers.
The Advantage of Cockpit over Bloated Control Panels
Traditional server control panels often inject complex custom software stacks, replace core system packages, and consume hundreds of megabytes of RAM. Cockpit is an official, modern Linux server management console developed by Red Hat. Unlike third-party panels, Cockpit interacts directly with standard Linux system APIs (systemd, journald, udisks), using zero background memory when idle.
Step 1: Installing Cockpit on Ubuntu 24.04
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y cockpit cockpit-machines cockpit-podman
Step 2: Starting the Systemd Socket & Opening Firewall
sudo systemctl enable --now cockpit.socket
sudo ufw allow 9090/tcp comment "Cockpit Web Console"
sudo ufw reload
Step 3: Logging In and Managing Your Server
Navigate to https://YOUR_CONTABO_IP:9090 in your browser. Accept the self-signed certificate, log in with your Linux sudo user credentials, and enjoy real-time CPU/memory utilization graphs, storage partition resizing, and systemd service restarts from an elegant web interface.
